As an SDG Ambassador, Clare County Council is proud to champion the promotion, awareness, and implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, regional, and national levels.

Sustainable Development Goal Week 2026

Clare County Council, in its role as an SDG Ambassador, will host a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Week for the fourth consecutive year from September 19th to October 2nd. This county-wide initiative is held in alignment with both National SDG Week and the European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW), underscoring Clare’s continued commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and global cooperation.

A diverse programme of events will take place throughout the county, each designed to raise awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and to encourage meaningful local action. Highlights of the week include:

• SDG Week Poster Competition for young people aged 4 -13.
• A series of Digital Literacy Support sessions and Smart Phone Classes hosted by Clare Libraries
• The European Volunteering Capital 2027 Launch Event at Treacy's West County Hotel on 24^th September
• A Smart Energy Saving in Your Home workshop delivered by Clare Energy Agency in Kilkee Library on Saturday, 26^th September at 11.00am
• The Age Friendly Regional Sports Day at the University of Limerick on 28^th September
• The launch of the Cé Míse Art Exhibition at Glór on 29^th September
• The Health & Wellbeing Expo in the West County Hotel on Thursday, 1^st October, featuring over 65 information stands and expert speakers
• The Carrigoran Art & Craft Exhibition, poetry readings and book reading events on 2^nd October

These events provided valuable opportunities for individuals and communities to engage with the SDGs and explore practical ways to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
In September 2015, at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, 193 world leaders adopted the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

There are 17 goals and targets. It is a blueprint for the future, for people and the planet. They have the power to address the global challenges we face, including:

• an end to poverty
• sustainable economic development
• protection of the environment
• access to health and education services
• gender equality
• peaceful societies
• decent work

Where can I get information on the SDGs?

Ireland's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) data hub is a very useful resource to access information on specific goals and for checking how Ireland is measuring up.

Are the SDGs relevant to me?

Yes they are relevant to us all - at work, at home, in our communities and schools. Whether you are an individual, a member of a Community Development Group, Tidy Towns group or working in the public or private sector we can all link what we do to an SDG or indeed several SDGs. It is good for us all to be aware of the positive contribution we can make to sustaining our local and global communities for the future.
