Tyrone Guthrie Bursary

Clare County Council is offering a special bursary award to artists born or domiciled in Clare to enable them to spend up to two weeks at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, the artist’s workplace in County Monaghan. Each bursary covers all board and lodging expenses for a two week period, plus the use of a studio if necessary. Clare County Council reserves the right to split the bursary into two x 1 week stays if two artists are deemed to be worthy recipients.

The Tyrone Guthrie Centre Regional Bursary Scheme has the following objectives:

• To work closely with local authorities and their arts officers to discover emerging and established artists throughout the island of Ireland who might benefit from working at Annaghmakerrig.
• Through the artistic projects they realize to make their work apparent to the local communities from which they come, through exhibitions, performances, readings and other manifestations.
• Through this process to allow the Tyrone Guthrie Centre to establish partnerships with local authorities the length and breadth of the island of Ireland in keeping with its origins and aims as a major cross-border collaboration between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The scheme is offered by Clare County COuncil as it aligsn to Flourish – Clare Arts Development Plan 2019 – 2023 and our mission to
• Provide open and accessible opportunities for all
• Offer strategic support for artists
• Foster continued appreciation and development of the arts

CRITERIA

1. The bursaries are open to creative practitioners, in all art forms (as defined by the 2003 Arts Act), born or domiciled in County Clare.
2. Applicants should show significant achievement or potential in their chosen field. This would normally mean that writers should have already published in book form, painters or sculptors should have had one-person shows in reputable galleries and that composers or musicians should have had their work commissioned, recorded or performed, or whatever might be appropriate to the particular art form. Otherwise the applicant must demonstrate a high degree of promise attested by references or other forms of support from established figures in the arts.
3. Each application must be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae and a reasonable sample of the artist’s work: 10 images from visual artists, a book or 20 pages of published work from writers, a recording or score from musicians, and any other supporting material which might be relevant. Please do not assume that adjudicators will be famiiar with your work.
4. Applicants should state clearly what they wish to accomplish during their stay at Annaghmakerrig. This project outline is often decisive in determining which artists are successul and should demonstrate that the artist is working towards an exhibition, publication or performances which will be helped by a stay at the Centre.
5. Clare County Council makes its own preliminary selection from the applications it receives, often calling in expert advice to do so. Until all applications are received we do not know what artforms have applied so adjudicators are sought after the closing date. It may, therefore, take a few weeks for decisions to be arrived at.
6. Positive weighting will be applied to applicants who demonstrate financial hardship.
7. Previous bursary winners may reapply but positive weighting will be applied to applicants who have not previously attended the Centre.

ASSESSMENT

On assessing your application we will take the following into account:

• Artistic Background / Track Record / Potential of Applicant (25 marks)
• Quality of the Proposal clearly outlining what you wish to accomplish during your stay (25 marks)
• Potential Impact of the Proposal on the Artist’s own Professional Development (20 marks)
• Potential Impact of the Proposal on the Arts Environment & the Wider Public or (20 marks)
• Financial Hardship (5 marks)
• Previousy attended the Centre (5 marks)
