Growing awareness, understanding and acceptance across County Clare

What is Autism

(also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD)

Autism is a diverse group of conditions related to the development of the brain. The abilities and needs of people living with autism varies and can evolve over time. While some people with autism can live independently, others have severe disabilities and require life-long care and support. Evidence-based psychosocial interventions can improve communication and social skills, with a positive impact on the well-being and quality of life of both people with autism and their caregivers.

Care for people with autism needs to be accompanied by actions at community and societal levels for greater accessibility, inclusivity and support.

The initiative aims to:

  • Promote a countywide awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism.
  • Support organisations in ensuring their environments are appropriately accommodating for people with autism.
  • Work towards embedding an Autism Aware culture across County Clare through meaningful engagement and practice.

How we are working towards a ‘Clare Autism Aware’ culture:

  1. Delivering ‘Clare Autism Aware’ Training
  2. Encouraging and acknowledging 'Autism Friendly Spaces' in County Clare
